On the 1999-2003 BMW 540i 4.4L M62TU V8, the M62TU V8 fitted to the E39 540i added variable intake camshaft timing over the earlier M62. Each cylinder bank has its own VANOS adjuster unit on the nose of the camshaft, fed by a large screw-in solenoid valve that meters engine oil to the helical adjuster piston. The DME commands a cam angle, then compares it against the camshaft position sensor. If the intake cam on bank 1 does not reach or hold the commanded angle within the allowed time, the DME sets P1519 — camshaft position actuator, bank 1. Most owners see it alongside its bank 2 twin, P1522. On these engines the common root cause is a restricted or electrically failed VANOS solenoid rather than a broken adjuster. The solenoids are fed unfiltered engine oil and their internal spools gum up with varnish on cars run on extended oil intervals. A partially stuck spool lets the cam creep toward the commanded angle too slowly, so the plausibility check fails intermittently — the light comes on, goes out, comes back. Forum diagnoses also point at torn solenoid sealing gaskets that bleed pressure, oil-wicked or chafed connectors at the solenoid, and low oil level or too-thin/too-degraded oil, any of which can set the code with a mechanically sound VANOS. Drivers notice a lumpy, hunting idle, a loss of low-end torque so the car feels lazy below about 3,000 rpm, worse fuel economy, and occasionally a stall coming to a stop. Because the same symptoms come from unrelated M62TU faults, confirm with live cam-angle data rather than parts-swapping blind.

Common Symptoms

  • Rough, hunting or unstable idle
  • Loss of low-end torque and sluggish acceleration below 3,000 rpm
  • Check engine light with P1519, frequently together with P1522
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Occasional stalling when coming to a stop

How to Fix

Start with an oil-level and oil-condition check, then read live VANOS data. With a BMW-capable tool (INPA, ISTA, or a scanner that shows commanded versus actual camshaft angle), watch bank 1 while snapping the throttle. If the commanded value moves but the actual angle lags or never follows, the fault is in the oil path or the actuator, not the sensor. Many technicians also run the DME's VANOS activation test and listen for a distinct click at each solenoid. Check the solenoid electrically before condemning it — inspect the plug and wiring for oil intrusion and chafing, since a connector repair alone fixes some cars. The community's free proof is the swap test: exchange the bank 1 and bank 2 solenoids, clear the codes, and see whether the fault follows the part to P1522. If the coil is good, remove the solenoid and inspect it. On the M62TU the solenoids sit behind the timing covers and take an oversized hex socket, so budget for the special tool or a shop that has it. A varnished spool can sometimes be cleaned, but because the labor to reach it dominates the bill, replacing both solenoids with new OE units and fresh sealing gaskets while you are in there is the accepted repair. Change the oil and filter with the correct viscosity at the same time. If new solenoids and clean oil do not clear the code and the actual cam angle still will not track, the VANOS adjuster unit or the timing chain guides are worn and need attention. Realistically, budget around $350-600 for solenoids, gaskets, and an oil service at an independent shop, and $1,200-1,600 if the bank 1 adjuster unit has to come off.

Typical repair cost:$350 - $1,600
