On the 2001-2008 Mazda Tribute 3.0L V6 Duratec, the 3.0L Tribute uses a differential pressure feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor plumbed to the EGR tube by two short rubber hoses. The sensor's internal element degrades and the hoses crack or fall off, so the PCM sees no measurable flow and sets P0401 (insufficient EGR flow); a stuck or electrically failed EGR vacuum regulator solenoid sets P0403, and a carbon-plugged EGR passage in the intake sets P0401/P0402 as well. This is an emissions-inspection failure item on a large share of surviving Tributes. The common shop error is condemning the EGR valve itself - technicians on Tribute and Escape threads repeatedly find the actual fault is the DPFE sensor, its rubber signal hoses, or carbon blocking the EGR port, and the replaced valve does not clear the code.

On the 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, the HVAC blower speed resistor sits behind the glove box in the heater case and burns out across the whole 2001-2011 Tribute run, shared with the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner. The signature is that fan speeds 1 through 3 go dead while the top speed still works, because the highest setting bypasses the resistor and feeds the motor directly. The root cause is often not the resistor itself: an aging blower motor with worn bushings draws excess current and cooks the resistor, so a resistor replaced alone frequently fails again within months. On 2005-2006 Tributes the HVAC control head is also a documented failure point and can produce similar fan-speed symptoms.
