On the 2017-2021 Chrysler Pacifica 3.6L V6 Hybrid, the high-voltage battery pack in Pacifica PHEV models can develop internal short circuits and spontaneously catch fire, even while parked and turned off. Stellantis recalled 24,000+ vehicles after 7+ fire incidents. A previous software fix was deemed not effective and a second recall was issued. Recall 72B / NHTSA 24V-482 provides free battery replacement.

    Common Symptoms

    • Service Hybrid Electric Vehicle System warning
    • Battery not charging properly
    • Unusual heat from under vehicle
    • Burning smell from underneath
    • In worst case, fire while parked

    How to Fix

Park vehicle outside immediately, away from structures, until recall is completed. Do NOT charge the vehicle until recall remedy is applied. Contact Chrysler at 800-853-1403 for recall status. Recall 72B provides free diagnostic software update and battery replacement if abnormality detected.

On the 2017-2024 Chrysler Pacifica, the 8.4-inch UConnect 4 and 10.1-inch UConnect 5 infotainment systems freeze, go blank, or reboot randomly. Affects radio, touchscreen, GPS, rearview camera, Bluetooth, and rear entertainment. A class-action lawsuit covers 8.4A and 8.4AN systems. Some owners have had screens replaced multiple times without lasting resolution.

This issue also affects: Alfa Romeo Giulia

    Common Symptoms

    • Touchscreen freezes and becomes unresponsive
    • Screen goes blank or reboots while driving
    • Backup camera goes black
    • Radio changes stations or volume on its own
    • Apple CarPlay/Android Auto disconnects frequently

On the 2017-2024 Chrysler Pacifica, the Pacifica draws an unusually high parasitic current with the vehicle asleep, and the modules can fail to fully shut down - owners document the van entering an unresponsive state where lights and accessories stay powered with no way to switch them off, flattening the battery overnight. Because the van specifies a deep-cycle AGM battery for stop/start duty, short trips never fully recharge it and failures come with no warning, often well inside four years. On the Plug-In Hybrid the 12V auxiliary battery is charged from the high-voltage system, so once it is flat the van cannot boot the hybrid controller at all and the vehicle is dead even with a full traction battery.

This issue also affects: Chrysler 300, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Chrysler 200

    Common Symptoms

    • No-crank or dead van after sitting a few days
    • Battery fails with no prior warning under 4 years
    • Random module faults and warning-light storms
    • Accessories stay on with the van off
    • PHEV will not power up or start charging

    How to Fix

Replace with a correct-group AGM battery (never a flooded lead-acid) and register/reset the battery to the body controller so the charging strategy resets. Measure parasitic draw after a full 45-60 minute module sleep - anything well over roughly 50 mA points to a module staying awake (commonly the radio/telematics or a door module). Owners who keep a smart AGM-capable maintainer (CTEK/NOCO) on the van report essentially zero battery failures. On a PacHy, jump or charge the 12V auxiliary battery first before assuming a high-voltage fault.

What you need to diagnose it

The fix here starts with a test, not a part — which repair you need depends on what the test finds.

Testing and isolating the fault is DIY work. Replacing or reprogramming a control module is not — most are VIN-programmed, so a new one does nothing until a shop codes it to your car. Check for an open recall or service bulletin before buying anything.

On the 2017-2025 Chrysler Pacifica, the power liftgate struts, latch assembly, and control module fail, causing the liftgate to not open or close fully, reverse direction mid-travel, or stop responding to button presses entirely. The hydraulic struts lose pressure and cannot hold the liftgate open, letting it fall. The latch assembly sensor can also malfunction, causing the system to think the liftgate is not fully latched and triggering warning chimes. Minivan owners with frequent cargo access are most affected.

    Common Symptoms

    • Liftgate does not open or close with button press
    • Liftgate reverses direction mid-travel
    • Liftgate will not stay open — falls slowly or quickly
    • Warning chime indicating liftgate not latched
    • Liftgate opens only partway then stops

    How to Fix

Start by checking the liftgate latch striker alignment — misalignment causes latch sensor errors. Replace the power liftgate struts if the gate will not stay open or opens slowly (Mopar 68385386AA or Stabilus equivalents, $50-$100 each). If the liftgate motor or control module has failed, the entire power liftgate motor assembly needs replacement ($300-$700). Reset the liftgate control module by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes.

On the 2017-2025 Chrysler Pacifica, the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensors experience premature battery failure, causing persistent TPMS warning lights and inaccurate pressure readings. The factory TPMS sensors use lithium batteries with a typical lifespan of 5-7 years, but many Pacifica owners report failures as early as 3-4 years. When one sensor battery dies, the system displays a general TPMS warning, and the driver cannot determine which tire actually needs attention without a TPMS scan tool.

    Common Symptoms

    • TPMS warning light stays on despite correct tire pressures
    • Dash shows dashes instead of pressure readings for one or more tires
    • Intermittent TPMS warning that comes and goes
    • TPMS light comes on in cold weather and stays on
    • All tire pressures show as 0 psi on the display

    How to Fix

Replace the failed TPMS sensor(s). TPMS sensors cannot be battery-replaced — the entire sensor unit must be swapped. OEM sensors (Mopar 68399563AA) cost $40-$60 each and must be programmed to the vehicle using a TPMS relearn tool or dealer scan tool. Aftermarket programmable sensors from Autel or ATEQ are available for less ($20-$35 each). Replace all four sensors simultaneously if the vehicle is 5+ years old to avoid return visits.

On the 2017-2024 Chrysler Pacifica 3.6L Pentastar V6, the 3.6L Pentastar V6 in Pacifica models suffers from engine stalling due to loose ground connections (recall NHTSA 19V348), crankshaft position sensor sync issues, and premature head gasket failures typically around 75,000-85,000 miles. Cooling system failures can lead to coolant entering the combustion chamber, requiring complete engine replacement.

This issue also affects: Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300, Chrysler Aspen

    Common Symptoms

    • Engine stalls without warning while driving
    • Loss of power steering assist during stall
    • Coolant level dropping without visible external leak
    • White smoke from exhaust
    • Engine overheating

    How to Fix

Check recall NHTSA 19V348 for ground connection fix. For head gasket, use Felpro head gasket set HS26517PT. Monitor coolant level frequently - dropping level with no visible leak is a red flag. If coolant enters oil system, engine replacement may be required ($5,000-$8,000). 2020+ models reportedly have improved head gasket design.

On the 2017-2023 Chrysler Pacifica 3.6L Pentastar V6 (ERB/ERC), the 3.6L Pentastar's oil filter housing on the top of the engine valley is molded plastic and integrates the engine oil cooler, where coolant passes through the same casting. Heat cycling embrittles the plastic and the internal O-rings/seals, and over-torquing the oil filter cap at service cracks the cap threads or the housing body. The result is an oil leak that runs down the back of the block (often mistaken for a rear main seal), a coolant leak into the valley, or oil-and-coolant cross-contamination. Owners frequently chase a 'phantom' coolant loss for months because the leak evaporates off the hot engine before it drips.

    Common Symptoms

    • Oil leak at the rear/top of the engine
    • Coolant level dropping with no visible drip
    • Burning oil smell after driving
    • Oil residue in coolant reservoir
    • Low oil level between changes

    How to Fix

Replace the oil filter housing/oil cooler assembly. Owners and independent shops widely prefer the aluminum replacement housing (Dorman 926-959 style) over the OEM plastic unit, but reuse Mopar O-rings/seals for the coolant passages beneath the cooler rather than the cheap kit seals. Torque the filter cap strictly to spec (about 18 ft-lb) at every oil change. Flush and refill coolant afterward and inspect for oil contamination in the coolant bottle.

On the 2017-2023 Chrysler Pacifica 3.6L V6 Hybrid, internal transmission wiring connectors in PHEV models can short circuit, causing unexpected engine shutdown while driving. The low-voltage wiring harness within the transmission develops shorts, causing the gas engine to shut down and the vehicle to go into limp mode or lose motive power entirely. Recall 03A / NHTSA 23V010 issued.

This issue also affects: Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Cirrus

    Common Symptoms

    • Engine suddenly shuts off while driving

On the 2017-2025 Chrysler Pacifica, the ZF 9HP 9-speed automatic transmission in the Pacifica exhibits harsh or jerky 3-4 shifts, shuddering during light throttle acceleration at 25-40 mph, and occasional hesitation when downshifting. The 9-speed has had multiple software calibration updates since launch, and the adaptive learning can become confused by varied driving patterns. Cold weather worsens the harsh shifting. The issue persists across multiple model years despite ongoing TSBs.

This issue also affects: Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Cirrus

    Common Symptoms

    • Harsh or jerky 3-4 upshift
    • Shudder during light acceleration at 25-40 mph
    • Hesitation or hunting between gears on hills
    • Transmission feels rough when cold
    • Occasional delayed downshift when passing

    How to Fix

Visit a dealer for the latest transmission control module (TCM) software update — Stellantis has released numerous calibration updates (most recent as of 2025 is TSB 21-013-24 or newer). After the update, the transmission needs a re-adaptation period of 500-1,000 miles of mixed driving. If harsh shifting persists, a transmission fluid drain and refill with Mopar ZF 9-speed fluid may help. In severe cases, valve body replacement resolves persistent harsh shifts ($1,000-$2,000).

On the 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacifica, chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling 2021-2023 Pacifica minivans under NHTSA campaign 24V436000. The radio software may prevent the rearview image from displaying, so shifting the Pacifica into reverse may produce no camera view at all. Without that image the van fails to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility." NHTSA lists the consequence as decreased driver visibility and an increased risk of a crash. This is a distinct defect from the previously documented condition where the camera image stays on screen after leaving reverse. FCA's campaign designations are 66B and 79B.

    Common Symptoms

    • Rearview camera image fails to display when reverse is engaged
    • Loss of the rear view while backing the minivan

    How to Fix

The correction is free. Dealers will update the radio software, and for some vans the update is delivered over the air with no dealer visit required. Owner letters were mailed beginning July 9, 2024. Look up your Pacifica's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm 24V436000 applies and is unrepaired, then contact a Chrysler dealer or FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403 to have the software applied.

On the 2017-2025 Chrysler Pacifica, power sliding door lock actuators and drive motors fail, causing doors to not open or close automatically, get stuck partially open, or make grinding/clicking noises. Most common non-powertrain complaint among Pacifica owners. The actuator's internal mechanism sticks in the lock position.

    Common Symptoms

    • Sliding door won't open or close automatically
    • Whirring, grinding, or clicking noise from door
    • Door opens partially then stops
    • Sliding Door Open warning despite door being closed
    • Door won't latch properly

On the 2017-2023 Chrysler Pacifica, pacificas with the tri-pane/panoramic roof route roof-trough water down four drain tubes inside the A- and D-pillars. The tubes clog with debris or, from the factory, are crimped or left disconnected behind the trim. Water then backs up out of the roof trough and runs down the inside of the body. The classic symptoms are a wet headliner above the second-row seat on the driver's side, water pooling in the third-row footwell or the rear cargo well, and a musty smell. Left alone it soaks the carpet padding and can reach body control modules and connectors under the floor.

    Common Symptoms

    • Wet headliner above the second-row seat
    • Water in the third-row footwell or rear cargo well
    • Dripping from the overhead console or A-pillar
    • Musty/mildew smell in the cabin
    • Unexplained electrical faults after rain

    How to Fix

Locate the blockage and clear it - the front drains can often be flushed with low-pressure air or a soft trimmer line from the roof trough, but the rear tubes and any crimped or disconnected tube require removing the headliner, D-pillar trim, vanity mirrors and overhead console to reroute or replace the hose. Dealers have replaced crimped drain lines and soaked carpet under warranty. Pull and dry the carpet and padding fully to prevent mold and connector corrosion, and flush the drains annually if parking under trees.

On the 2017-2024 Chrysler Pacifica, the Pacifica's rear calipers carry a motor-on-caliper electronic parking brake (EPB) actuator and use slide pins that leave the factory with minimal grease. Road salt and water corrode the slide pins and the actuator housing, so the caliper stops floating and only part of the pad face contacts the rotor - owners report pads contacting roughly half the rotor and wearing unevenly and prematurely. When the EPB actuator itself corrodes or its motor fails, the parking brake sticks applied or throws a fault, and the scan-tool 'service mode' needed to retract the piston will not run, so the pads cannot be changed conventionally.

    Common Symptoms

    • Rear pads worn unevenly or worn out early
    • Parking brake will not release or stays engaged
    • 'Service Electric Park Brake' message
    • 'Service Mode is Not Available - Release Park Brake' when trying to retract pistons
    • Dragging or grinding from a rear wheel, hot wheel after driving

    How to Fix

Service the rear brakes properly: clean and re-grease (or replace) the caliper slide pins with high-temp silicone brake grease at every pad change, and free or replace seized pins. Retracting the rear pistons requires putting the EPB into service/maintenance mode with a scan tool (wiTECH or an equivalent capable tool) - do not force the piston. A failed EPB actuator is replaced individually on the caliper; a corroded or seized caliper body is replaced as an assembly and the EPB then recalibrated.

On the 2017-2024 Chrysler Pacifica, the second-row Stow 'n Go buckets fold into floor bins using a cable-operated release: a strap at the seat back releases the recliner, and a second cable releases the floor latches at the seat base. The release cables slip out of their guides or stretch, and the floor latch mechanisms collect crumbs, coins and road grit inside the bin, so the latch will not release or will not re-latch. The seat then either refuses to fold or, worse, sits in the tracks without locking - a seat that will not positively latch is a crash-safety problem, not just an inconvenience. Trim and seat-cover material getting pinched under the fold-up plastic and an unfolded armrest jamming the mechanism are two other common causes owners identify.

    Common Symptoms

    • Second-row seat will not fold into the floor bin
    • Seat will not release from the floor latch
    • Seat will not latch or stay down when returned upright
    • Release strap pulls with no effect
    • Seat rocks or moves in the tracks when latched

    How to Fix

First clear the obvious mechanical blocks: fold the armrest in, free any seat-cover fabric caught under the hinge plastic, and vacuum debris out of the floor bin and around the floor strikers, then lubricate the latches. If the seat still will not release, pull the seat-base trim and re-seat or replace the release cable in its guide - a cable out of its guide is the single most common documented cause of both seats failing to release. Always confirm the seat locks positively in the upright position before carrying passengers; a latch that will not lock needs the latch assembly replaced.

On the 2017-2025 Chrysler Pacifica, the A/C compressor fails prematurely, often between 60,000-100,000 miles, leaving the entire cabin without cooling. Additionally, the rear A/C system (standard on most trims) can lose effectiveness even when the compressor is functional due to a clogged rear A/C expansion valve or low refrigerant charge. Given the Pacifica is a family minivan, A/C failure creates a significant usability issue, especially in summer with children.

    Common Symptoms

    • A/C blows warm air from all vents
    • Rear A/C colder or warmer than front (inconsistent)
    • A/C compressor clutch not engaging
    • Grinding or rattling noise from compressor area
    • A/C works intermittently then fails completely

    How to Fix

For compressor failure, replace the A/C compressor, receiver/drier, and expansion valve as a system. Flush the condenser to remove debris from the failed compressor. For rear A/C only issues, check the rear expansion valve (often clogged) and ensure the system is fully charged with the correct amount of R-1234yf refrigerant. A full compressor replacement runs $1,000-$1,800.

On the 2017-2023 Chrysler Pacifica, the Pacifica's temperature and mode blend doors are driven by small geared actuators behind the dash and glovebox. When new, internal friction keeps the actuator from overshooting its commanded position; after a year or two the gear train wears in, the actuator overshoots and then hunts to correct, producing the characteristic rhythmic clicking or ticking from behind the glovebox - sometimes continuing briefly with the van switched off. Eventually the plastic gear teeth strip and the door sticks, so one side of the cabin blows cold while the other blows hot, or air stops coming from the selected vents.

    Common Symptoms

    • Rhythmic clicking or ticking behind the dash/glovebox
    • Clicking continues briefly after shutdown
    • One side of the cabin blows hot, the other cold
    • No heat or no A/C from certain vents
    • Air will not switch between floor, panel and defrost

    How to Fix

Identify the offending actuator by feel and sound (temperature/blend actuators live behind the glovebox and center stack; mode actuators are lower) and replace it, then run the HVAC actuator calibration so the new motor learns its stops. Replacing only the failed actuator is normal - there is no need to replace the whole HVAC box. Typical shop cost runs about $200-$260 per actuator; the glovebox-side units are a DIY job in about an hour.
